A PHYSICAL THERAPY SESSION
At your first visit, a Doctor of Physical Therapy will perform a thorough evaluation and discuss the findings with you. Tests performed during the evaluation include measurements of your:
- Overall health
- Strength
- Flexibility
- Balance
- Range of motion in joints
- Posture
- Gait
- Body structure
- Soft tissue mobility
- Functional movements: the way in which bones, muscles, ligaments and joints work together

The therapist takes into account your expectations and goals, your age, and your physical abilities when designing your personalized physical therapy program The therapist will then create a treatment plan based on your physician’s recommendations and the results of the evaluation. At APTA, our advanced training in orthopedic manual-physical therapy includes hands-on approaches that provide the latest and best physical therapy care possible. Our treatments emphasize:
- Research-based exercise prescription
- Joint and soft-tissue mobilization
- Functional movement retraining
- Postural education

An at-home exercise program with written instructions and illustrations will be given to you following your first visit. In addition, your physical therapist will send a report to your physician regarding your evaluation and treatment plan. Before you return to your doctor, your therapist will also send an updated report describing your progress in therapy, and future treatment goals, or discharge plans.
